Externally Pressurized Expansion Joints

Externally Pressurized Expansion Joints are the ideal solution when very large axial movement must be absorbed under high pressure. In this design, the flow medium surrounds the outside of the bellows, while the interior remains at atmospheric pressure, vented directly to the atmosphere.

This eliminates the risk of pressure-induced instability, such as squirm or buckling, common in long, internally pressurized bellows. The external pressure acts as a stabilizing force, allowing the joint to safely handle extreme axial compression.

These Expansion Joints Offer

  • Virtually unlimited axial movement capacity
  • No pressure thrust on internal bellows surfaces
  • Protective covers that shield the convolutions from mechanical damage and environmental exposure
  • Suitability for underground or insulated installations
  • Improved safety through enhanced containment in case of bellows failure
  • With only the exterior subjected to system pressure, this configuration ensures stability, flexibility, and longevity in demanding applications.
