Expertise in the Metallurgical Sector-Iron & Steel Industry

LSI–Mech Engineers Private Limited has established itself as a pioneer in the design, engineering, and supply of metal expansion joints for the metallurgical sector, particular in the iron and steel industry. With over two decades of experience, we have successfully delivered expansion joint solutions for more than 20 blast furnace projects across India. We proudly hold the distinction of being the first Indian manufacturer to develop and supply metal expansion joints for Mega Blast Furnaces.

Proven Solutions for Blast Furnaces

Our capabilities include the development and supply of pressure balanced expansion joints such as the TRT Inlet DN 1800 Inline and TRT Outlet DN 2400 Elbow types, both installed at JSW Steel, Toranagallu. Our metal expansion joints are engineered to withstand extreme conditions in critical equipment such as stoves, bustle mains, and turbo blowers.

Applications Beyond Blast Furnaces

In addition to blast furnace systems, we also design custom metal expansion joints for Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) plants, iron ore pelletizing plants, and coke ovens. Our expansion joints have been successfully implemented at JSW Steel, Jindal Steel & Power, Tata Steel, Tata Metaliks, Electrosteel, Kalyani Steels, Sesa Goa, Jindal Saw, and other major players, underscoring our engineering reliability.

Applications Beyond Blast Furnaces

In addition to blast furnace systems, we also design custom metal expansion joints for Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) plants, iron ore pelletizing plants, and coke ovens. Importance of Expansion Joints in Iron Making

The blast furnace process involves complex reactions between descending burden (coke, iron ore, and fluxes) and ascending hot gases, reaching temperatures over 1200°C. Our metal expansion joints are crucial in handling the thermal stresses and relative movements that occur in this process. For direct reduction, which removes oxygen in the solid state using syn gas or reformed natural gas, our products provide reliable thermal compensation under fluctuating load and temperature conditions.

Smelting and Steel Making Applications

In smelting reduction, iron ore is first pre-reduced and then smelted to produce molten iron. The outcome Pig Iron, DRI, or HBI is further refined into steel through the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) or Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) routes. Metal expansion joints are integrated across these steel making processes to ensure thermal flexibility and reduce mechanical stress.

Critical Systems Supported by Expansion Joints

The BOF-based steel making route involves multiple interconnected systems: Hot Blast, Cold Blast, Combustion Air and Gas Systems, Waste Gas Handling, Dust Collection, Turbo Blowers, Scrubbers, Cooling Systems, and Continuous Casting. Our metal expansion joints are deployed across all these systems to absorb multi-directional movements (X, Y, Z) and to protect the connected equipment from stress and fatigue.

High-Performance Expansion Joints for Hot Blast Systems

For hot blast stoves, our custom-designed expansion joints compensate for high-temperature skin variation, ambient changes, and internal pressurization. These are engineered with special refractory linings, dust proof seals, and compact footprints to suit space-constrained installations. Designs include hinged, universal hinged, and gimbal expansion joints, specifically tailored for thermal flexibility and low maintenance across long furnace campaigns.

Staves Expansion Joints

Specialized Applications in Copper Stave Cooling

We are proud to be the first Indian company to supply expansion joints for copper stave cooling systems in blast and Corex furnaces. These joints, fitted with elastomer-based dust proof seals, have proven critical in maintaining thermal compensation for copper stave inlet and outlet pipe connections. Thousands of such metal expansion joints have been successfully commissioned.

Advanced Solutions for Top Gas and Turbo Blower Systems

Our advanced expansion joint designs are integral to Top Gas Ducts, Scrubbers, and Turbo Blower Exhaust Systems. For example, DN 2300 lateral expansion joints were developed for top gas to scrubber duct connections with significant lateral deflection, while DN 1500 gimbal expansion joints handle complex movements with cold springing to reduce nozzle moments. These installations at JSW Steel further validate our capabilities.
